Over the years, YWAM has sent out staff and student teams to help local churches and businesses, Kona Community Hospital, elder care facilities, after-school youth programs, Family Support Services, the Humane Society, the Salvation Army, the Pregnancy Center, Kona Hospice and programs that feed the homeless. Hundreds of YWAMers volunteer at Ironman every October.
Activities vary depending on the number of students, but here is some ways staff, staff children and students have served our community:
- Drilled a well, opened a computer lab, and supplied a thrift store in the Marshallese community.
- Day camps for children in housing projects.
- Participated in sign waving events to stand against drug abuse and abortion.
- Taught in after-school tutoring programs for local children.
- Picked up trash along the roadsides.
- Assisted activities coordinator with arts and crafts at Kona Adult Day Care Center.
- Created a photo gallery for residents in a long-term care facility.
- Hosted the annual Keiki Triathlon for kids who are part of our award-winning Pre-School.
- Served local government by facilitating small groups on affordable housing issues and by hosting a mayoral candidates forum.
- Hosted skateboard, basketball and volleyball events for local kids and helped form the Kona Skatepark Association.
- Served at the “Meet N’ Eat” feeding program established by the late Ken Clewett of U of N, and served meals for the homeless at Triangle Park and the Old Airport Park.
